At Candylicious in Dubai, you can design and print out your own fruit candy, and it’s even vegan and gluten-free

The U.S. is next in line for a Magic Candy Factory, which will be unveiled later this spring.

Candylicious, a candy store in Dubai, has begun selling what is believed to be the world’s first 3D-printed candy on demand.

The store’s newly-launched “Magic Candy Factory,” which debuted February 29, relies on two 3D printers that can “print” customized candy in minutes.

The factory is the brainchild of German candy-maker Katjes, which opened its first Magic Candy Factory in a café in Berlin, though that printer was only able to produce gum. The new Magic Candy Factory in Dubai, however, can produce all kinds of sweets. A pectin-based, vegan, gluten-free recipe is used as the printing material, flavored by fruit purees like mango, raspberry, blackcurrant, and strawberry. The machines can also print out a simple sheet of candy paper to be used as an edible greeting card. Currently, the machines only produce gummy candy and no chocolate — for now.

“You get varied tastes and nationalities in Dubai and therefore it was perfect for us to partner with Candylicious,” Melissa Snover, a managing director for Katjes, told 7Days. “The people of Dubai have a ‘sweet tooth’ and are always interested in the latest tech innovations—a great place to present the Magic Candy Factory.” The next Magic Candy Factory is slated to be unveiled somewhere in the United States in the spring, though an exact location has not been announced.
